Hashtags and 3 reasons to create your own

As the hashtag celebrates its 10th birthday we thought we’d take a closer look at the little symbol which has made a very big impact on the world of social media.

The # symbol is used 125 million times a day around the world. Indeed, it’s very rare now that you will see a photo, comment or response on any major social media platform that is not followed by a hashtag. We call this the hashtag frenzy and they really are everywhere!

Even when you sit down on an evening to watch tv, there it is in the corner of your screen. It has created a completely new and interactive way to engage with advertising campaigns, music, movies and tv programmes. We can now converse with complete strangers about what is happening in the world around us using a simple symbol. How many of you sat and scrolled through twitter whilst watching #LoveIsland to see other people’s reactions, or jump on your feed as soon as #GoT has finished to discuss plot theories?

But what can this interaction mean for your business and how can you capitalise on the use of hashtags?

  1. Building brand awareness & credibility

By adding a hashtag with the name of your brand or a clever slogan, you can gain recognition and build awareness of your product on social media. A # can help you to establish yourself as a market leader in your field, not a follower and that’s where we all want to be right? At the front of the pack. It can also be a fantastic opportunity to showcase your brand and what you are all about so go on, show some personality and have some fun.

  1. Reach out to your audience

Audience engagement increases with the use of a #. People love to share their experiences on social media and they love to feel part of a community. A # can help create that link between you and your audience in a way no traditional marketing can. Think about it, if everyone who uses your product includes a post about their experience on their social media platform and includes your #, you are suddenly increasing your audience engagement and reach.

  1. Tracking performance and engagement

Creating a # can help you to track the impact your business or product is having and what people really think of it. Twitter stores all comments using the same tag together so with a few clicks you can identify what your audience is really thinking. You can also assess the impact your # is having and whether it is being used effectively to market your business.

So, to answer the question #DoHashtagsMatter? We think there is only one simple answer, #YES.

At CGC we have a dedicated team of social media experts who can help you to create an effective # and social media campaigns for your business.
